Son of Darkness

The Adventure

The city keeps its secrets well.
You weren't there to uncover them.

Aurelien is the kind of city that dresses its secrets well. The cobblestones are worn smooth and the lanterns flicker just right. People know better than to ask too many questions here. You weren't there for any of that.

You were there for one man.
Then something tore him apart in front of you.

Bastien Morneau is dead before the PCs can finish their business with him. Something made of shadow did it, without warning and without explanation. What starts as an investigation into a single killing becomes something worse with every answer the PCs uncover. His brother Remy dies the same way, right in front of them. The youngest, Lucien, is convinced a local merchant is behind it all. He’s wrong, and he doesn’t live long enough to find out.

Son of Darkness is a horror adventure set in the French-inspired city of Aurelien. Three brothers, one after another, each death feeding something that started small and has been growing since. By the time the PCs reach Celeste Morneau, the creature has fed well and the woman at the center of it is barely holding on. The shadow came home to finish what it started, and it has been patient enough to let the family do most of the work.

What's Inside
Setting Aurelien: a city on the continent of Marais-Noir, where the sun stopped rising one morning and no one has explained it since
The Mystery Three brothers are being hunted by something made of shadow. The most obvious suspect is the shady business partner of one of them, and he's hiding enough that he almost looks guilty
The Threat A creature of living shadow that cannot be harmed. At least not yet. It moves without warning and feeds on something specific to this bloodline
The Stakes The brothers fall one by one while their mother unravels around a secret she has kept too long. Every death makes the next one harder to stop
Encounters 2 combat encounters: neither one is clean, and both leave a mark on what comes after
Compatibility Fully compatible with D&D 5e and 5.5e. Built for level 5–6 characters
