They made friends in the swamp.
The church is full of them now.
A desperate fight against swamp creatures throws the PCs together with the Obzerian Order: a scrappy band of artifact hunters bound for a new village and an easy contract. They’re good company. Their gremlin, Kanter, carries a relic of questionable origin and offers to sell it once the job pays out, which he and the PCs seal in blood.
Walter’s Crossing is a village on the rise: a new church is going up, stone is hauled in from the quarry, and money changes hands. The Obzerian Order works unnaturally fast. But shortly after their arrival, Elsa the server stops coming to meals. Then the Order stops coming to meals. Then a laborer turns up in one of their vests with a story that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.
A child pulls the cloth off a statue.
It has Kanter’s face.
The gargoyles adorning the church do not appear carved. In truth, they are transformed. People the village wanted silenced seemingly have been turned to stone and mounted as a warning, with the blessing of a bishop and the complicity of every soul in Walter’s Crossing who kept quiet and kept working as if nothing happened. The PCs’ new friends are up there on the wall, and the sculptor still has drinks to offer the PCs.
The Tower! is an adventure about a conspiracy hiding in plain sight, behind cheerful faces and details that don’t add up. By the time your players see what’s on the wall, they’ll already be inside.
By the time your players understand what’s been done to the Obzerian Order, the drinks will already be poured.
